Our Fraternity
Short History of Portiuncula Fraternity
Portiuncula fraternity was established in November 1982 by Fr Oliver Hebert, TOR at Sacred Heart Monastery near Winchester, VA. There were 15 professed fraternity members. Sacred Heart was a novitiate and an infirmary/retirement home for friars until 2005 when the infirmed and retired friars were transferred to Loretto, PA.
Often the fraternity would hold its annual retreat at Priestfield Pastoral Center in Kearneysville, WV. Around 2009 the Arlington Diocese purchased the former Sacred Heart facility, renovated it, and appointed Fr Sam Vaccarella, TOR as the San Domiano Spiritual Life Center’s first director. Fr Sam also served as our fraternity’s spiritual assistant from 2011-2015.
Our seven professed members and two candidates in formation generally meet from 1-4 pm of the second Sunday of every month, except May at the Priestfield Retreat Center. You are welcome to join us. However, please check since we often change meeting times and places.
